Simple Travel Checklist for iPhone — Help Guide

Using the Android app? See the Android help guide.

Getting Started

Simple Travel Checklist helps you pack for any trip without forgetting a thing. Add everything you need to take, tick items off as you pack, and reuse the list next time.

The first time the app opens it shows a few example items and a tip: add what you need in Edit, then switch to Pack and tick items off. While the examples are there, a banner offers Clear; it asks first, then removes only the example items. Anything you have added or renamed stays.

Pack & Edit

The Pack | Edit switch moves the list between its two jobs. Tap a side, drag along the switch, or swipe the list left or right. Settings › Behaviour › Swipe Between Pack and Edit turns swiping off, and Pack Mode First chooses which side comes first.

Edit

  • Every item is listed, ticked or not; Add Item sits at the foot of the list
  • On iPhone, the ALL circle beside the switch ticks or unticks the whole list
  • Drag an item by its handle to reorder it (the handles follow Edit Mode in Settings)

Pack

  • Tick an item as it goes in the bag; ticked items disappear so you only see what is left, and a notice with Undo catches a wrong tick
  • With categories on, tap a heading to fold it away if Pack Mode - Enable Expand/Collapse is on (in Edit mode headings always fold)
  • When the last item is ticked: confetti

Adding Items

In Edit mode, Add Item sits at the foot of the list, with an emoji button on the left and + on the right (on iPad, each category card ends with its own Add Item line, and + is in the toolbar).

  • Type a name and press Return to add it; new items go to the top. With categories on, Return opens Add Items so you can choose the category
  • Tap the emoji button first to choose the item's emoji, or let the app guess one from the name
  • + opens Add Items, carrying anything you have typed

Adding several at once

In Add Items, type one item per line, or paste a whole list from Notes or a message: every line becomes an item, with an emoji guessed from its name. Tap a line's emoji to change it, or its cross to remove it. With categories on, choose the category from the chips at the top; with templates on, From a Template… is there too. Tap Add N items; leaving with lines typed asks before discarding them.

Managing Items

The item menu

In Edit mode, tap an item's ⋯; in Pack mode, press and hold it. The menu has Edit, Add Reminder (or Edit and Cancel Reminder) and Delete. Edit Item changes the name, the emoji and, with categories, the category. On iPad, tap an item's name to show it in the side panel instead.

Emojis

The emoji picker searches in your language. If the one you want is not there, type any emoji into Search or type an emoji: the app remembers it for that item and suggests it next time. No emoji leaves an item without one, and Settings › Behaviour › Item Emojis hides them all.

Deleting

A deleted item comes back with Undo for a few seconds; delete notices are red. Delete Checked Items, last in the list's ⋯ menu in Edit mode, deletes everything ticked straight away, also with Undo. To delete several chosen items, see Categories.

Sorting

Sort A–Z and Sort Z–A in the same menu sort the whole trip, with Undo. Settings › Behaviour › Edit Mode Menus chooses which actions appear in that menu.

Trips (Premium)

With Trips on, every trip has its own list. Turn them on under Settings › Trips › Enable Trips; your current list becomes the first trip.

The Trips home

  • + opens New Trip: an emoji, a name, optionally a date and Remind me to pack, and Start from a template to fill it in one tap. Tap Create
  • Each card shows the date, a countdown in the last week, how much is packed and a progress bar that turns green when everything is packed. A trip whose date has gone says Past
  • Tap a card's ⋯, or press and hold it, for Edit, Set as Default, Duplicate, Save as Template, Export to PDF, Share Trip and Delete. Delete asks first, then can be undone; it never appears on the default trip, or with Allow Trips to Be Deleted off
  • With two or more trips, Edit in the top bar lets you drag trips into order and hide the ones you are not using; tap Done. The default trip cannot be hidden

Switching trips

On iPhone, tap the trip's name in the title for Trips Home and your other trips with their packed counts. On iPad the trips are in the sidebar.

Packing reminders

Give a trip a date and turn on Remind me to pack: you are reminded 3 days before, the day before and the day you leave, at 8:00, with how many items are left to pack. Change the defaults under Settings › Trips › Default Reminder Days and Default Reminder Time, or for one trip in its sheet.

More settings

Opening Screen chooses whether the app starts on the Trips home or a particular trip, and Hide Trip Tips hides the tips on the Trips screen.

Categories (Premium)

Categories group your items under headings such as Clothes, Toiletries and Tech. Turn them on under Settings › Categories › Enable Categories.

  • Each heading is the first row of its card: in Edit mode a circle that ticks the whole category, the name and a count; tap it to fold the category away
  • In Edit mode, press and hold a heading (on iPad, tap its card's ⋯) for Edit Category…, Add Category Below… and Remove from Trip, which removes the category's items from this trip after asking; the category itself stays
  • Reorder Categories, in the list's ⋯ menu, opens a screen where you drag the categories into order (on iPad, drag them in the side panel's Categories tab)

Moving or deleting several items

In Edit mode, press and hold an item to start selecting (on iPad, Change Category… or Delete Items… in the side panel), then tap the others you want, or a heading's circle to take the whole category; Select All takes everything. Move to… moves them to another category (you can add one from there), and the bin deletes them after asking. Either way Undo follows.

Managing categories

  • Settings › Categories › Manage Categories lists every category with how many items it has; tap one to edit it, swipe it to delete or edit it, and drag to reorder
  • + opens Add Categories: type one, or paste a whole list with one per line. Ones you already have are marked and skipped
  • The ⋯ sorts categories A–Z, Z–A or by most or least items, shows or hides the drag handles, and has Delete Unused Categories, which removes every category no trip uses; all with Undo
  • A category with items cannot be deleted; move or remove the items first. The default category is marked Default

Templates (Premium)

A template is a ready-made list you add to a trip in a tap. Turn them on under Settings › Templates › Enable Templates. Open them from Templates in the list's ⋯ (on iPad, the side panel), From a Template… in Add Items, or Start from a template in New Trip.

Built in

Eleven of them: Summer, Winter, Short trip, Beach, Ski, Camping, Camping clothes, Camping food, Working away, With pets and With kids. Tap one to tick the items you want (or ALL), then Add N items. They go into the trip you have open, filed under categories of the same name, which are created if you do not have them. Anything already on the trip shows Added and is skipped, even when one says “Sleeping bag” and the other “Sleeping bags”.

After you add one, the app suggests a good one to try next: Beach after Summer, Ski after Winter, With kids after Summer, Short trip or Beach, and Camping clothes and Camping food after Camping.

Your own

  • Save as Template, in a trip card's menu or the list's ⋯, keeps a trip for next time. Ticked items are saved unticked
  • + on the Templates screen starts a New Template and opens the editor: tap a name to change it, give items an emoji, add items with the Add Item line at the end of each category, add categories with Add Category, and reorder categories with the ⇅ button
  • A template's ⋯ (or press and hold) has Rename, Duplicate and Delete; open it and tap the pencil to change what is in it. A built-in has Edit a Copy, which puts a copy in Your Templates ready to rename; the original stays
  • Edit in the top bar lets you hide templates with the eye, or drag them into order; tap Done
  • A few days after a trip, the app can offer to save it as a template. Suggest Templates in Settings turns that off, and Hide Template Tips hides the tips

Share Trip (Premium)

Send a trip to a friend so they can pack from it too. On iPhone, choose Share Trip in a trip card's ⋯ on the Trips home; on iPad, in the side panel or a trip's menu in the sidebar:

  • All Items or Unpacked Only
  • Include Emojis on or off
  • Tap Share and choose how to send it: Messages, Mail, AirDrop or any app

It goes as a small file with the trip's name and date, its items and the categories they use. What you have ticked, your reminders and your other trips stay with you.

Adding a trip someone sent you

Open the file in Travel Checklist and the Shared Trip screen shows what is in it and which categories it will add. Change the name if you like, then tap Add Trip. It arrives as a new trip with every item unticked; your other trips are not changed. Adding a trip needs Premium: without it the button reads Unlock Premium to Add.

Trip files work between iPhone, iPad and Android, both ways.

Export to PDF (Premium)

Turn any trip into a checklist to print or send. Choose Export to PDF where Share Trip is:

  • All Items or Unpacked Only
  • Include Emojis on or off
  • Include Summary Page adds a first page listing each category and how many items it has (for lists grouped by category)

Tap Export and choose where it goes: Mail, Files, AirDrop or Print. The PDF then opens on screen. Every item prints with an empty box to tick, grouped by category in two columns, on A4 or US Letter paper to suit your region.

On iPad

On iPad the app is laid out for the bigger screen. With Premium and Trips on:

  • Trips are in a sidebar on the left, with how much each has left to pack; the default trip is marked with a house. Picking a trip hides the sidebar; in landscape, the pin keeps it open beside the list. Press and hold a trip for its menu, and tap Edit to reorder or hide trips
  • The checklist is laid out as category cards in columns, under the trip's name, a progress ring and its date. In Edit mode each card ends with an Add Item line, and its ⋯ has Edit Category…, Add Category Below…, Expand or Collapse and Remove from Trip
  • The Pack | Edit switch is in the toolbar, with + for Add Items (in Edit mode), search, Settings and the side panel button
  • The side panel on the right has Actions: the trip's (Edit Trip, Export to PDF, Share Trip), templates' (Save as Template, Templates) and the list's (Pack All or Unpack All, Change Category…, Delete Items…, Reorder Items, the sorts, Expand All and Collapse All, and Delete Checked Items). With categories on, its Categories tab is where you drag categories into order, add, edit and sort them
  • Tap an item's name and the side panel shows that item: change its name, emoji and category, mark it packed, set a reminder or delete it
  • Settings has its sections on the left and their page on the right; Templates shows the tiles beside the template you picked; Add Items opens as a card

Free users, or anyone with Trips off, get the same checklist and side panel without the trips sidebar. In a narrow Split View window the app looks as it does on iPhone.

Reminders

Open an item's menu (its ⋯ in Edit mode, or press and hold it in Pack mode) and choose Add Reminder to be notified at a time you pick. The item shows the time, and the notification names the trip and category; from the notification you can mark the item Packed or Snooze 1 Hour. Open the menu again to edit or cancel the reminder. Item reminders are free; packing reminders for a whole trip come with Trips.

The first reminder you set asks for permission to send notifications. If you refused it, turn notifications on for the app under Settings › Notifications on your iPhone or iPad.

iCloud Sync

Settings › Sync › Sync with iCloud keeps your trips, items, categories and templates the same on every device signed in to your iCloud account. It is on by default and needs nothing but an iCloud sign-in; the Status row says whether it is working.

Sync is not a backup: deleting something on one device deletes it everywhere. For a copy you keep, see Export below. Changes to the switch take effect the next time the app opens.

▲ Back to Contents

Export & Import (Premium)

Settings › Your Data has Import from a File… and, below it, Export a Copy….

  • Export a Copy… saves your trips, items, categories and templates to one file, ending in .stcbackup, and hands it to the share sheet: save it to Files, AirDrop it, or send it to yourself
  • Import from a File… reads such a file and replaces everything in the app, after asking. Files from older versions still import, and the same file works with the Android app

To send just one trip to someone else, use Share Trip instead: it adds a trip to their app rather than replacing everything.

Settings

Tap the gear. Search Settings finds any option, and Premium users can reorder the sections from the ⋯ menu. On iPhone they are:

  • Appearance: App (System, Light or Dark) and Widget (Match app, Light or Dark)
  • Categories, Trips and Templates: see their sections above
  • Behaviour: Swipe Between Pack and Edit, Item Emojis, Pack Mode First, Pack Mode - Enable Expand/Collapse, Edit Mode (drag handles) and Edit Mode Menus
  • Sync and Your Data: see above
  • Language sets the app's language, in your iPhone's Settings
  • Help & Support: Help Guide (this page), Share App and Rate This App, with Delete All Data at the foot
  • About: the version, the privacy policy, the terms, our website and More Apps

On iPad, Settings shows its sections on the left, and Delete All Data is at the foot of Your Data. Delete All Data erases everything after you type OK and starts the app afresh with its starter items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I reuse my list for the next trip?

In Edit mode tap the ALL circle to untick everything (on iPad, Unpack All in the side panel). With Premium you can also save the trip as a template, or choose Duplicate in its card's menu; the copy starts unticked.

Q: Where did my ticked items go?

Pack mode hides them so you see only what is left. Switch to Edit to see the whole list.

Q: Can I undo a delete?

Yes. Deleting an item, the checked items, a selection, a category's items, a trip or a template shows Undo for a few seconds, and so do moves and sorts.

Q: Why can't I add items or search?

You are in Pack mode, which is only for ticking. Switch, or swipe, to Edit.

Q: I bought Premium on Android. Does it carry over?

No. Apple and Google purchases are separate, so the unlock here is a separate purchase. Your lists can move across with Export and Import.

Q: Does the app collect my data?

Your lists stay on your device and, with sync on, in your own iCloud account, which we cannot read. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob, and the app uses Firebase for crash reports and anonymous usage statistics; none of it includes your lists. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Q: A friend sent me a trip. How do I add it?

Open the file in Travel Checklist, check the name, and tap Add Trip. It becomes a new trip with every item unticked, and nothing else in the app changes. Adding a shared trip needs Premium. See Share Trip above.
