Simple Travel Checklist for iPhone — Help Guide

Using the Android app? See the Android help guide.

Getting Started

Simple Travel Checklist helps you pack for any trip without forgetting a thing. Add everything you need to take, tick items off as you pack, and reuse the list for the next trip.

The first time the app opens it shows a short example list. Edit the examples, or use Delete all on the banner to start with an empty list.

Adding items

In Edit mode, type a name in the Add item field at the bottom of the screen and tap + or Return. New items go to the top of the list.

Adding several at once

Tap the (chevron) button beside the add field to open Add items. Type one item per line, or paste a whole list from Notes or a message: every line becomes an item. Tap the picture beside a line to change it, and pick the category the items go into from the chips at the top.

Pictures

Each item gets a picture guessed from its name as you type (🧡 for Sunscreen, 🔌 for Phone Charger). Tap the picture on any item to choose a different one, or turn pictures off under Settings › Behaviour › Item pictures.

Edit & Pack Modes

The two chips under the title switch the list between its two jobs. Which one comes first is yours to choose under Settings › Behaviour › Pack mode first.

Edit mode

  • The add field and the search field are shown
  • Every item is listed, ticked or not; the All circle ticks or unticks the whole list
  • Drag the handle () on the right of an item to reorder it within its category
  • The button on each row opens its menu

Pack mode

  • Tap an item as it goes in the bag; ticked items disappear so you only see what is left
  • With categories on, tap a heading to fold its items away
  • When the last item is ticked: confetti

Managing Items

Editing an item

Long-press an item (or tap its in Edit mode) and choose Edit to rename it, change its picture or move it to another category.

Deleting

Long-press and choose Delete, or swipe the row left in Pack mode. An Undo bar appears for a few seconds.

Deleting everything you have packed

The menu in the top bar has Delete checked. It asks first, and it can be undone for a few seconds afterwards.

Sorting

The same top-bar menu sorts the list A–Z or Z–A.

Trips (Premium)

With trips on, every trip has its own list. Turn them on under Settings › Trips › Enable trips; your current list becomes the first trip.

The Trips home

  • Tap + in the top bar for a new trip: a name, a picture, and optionally a date
  • Each card shows the date, a countdown in the last week, and how much is packed
  • Swipe a card for Edit, Duplicate or Delete; long-press for the full menu
  • Edit in the top bar lets you drag trips into order and hide the ones you are not using (the eye on each card). Tap Done to save. The default trip cannot be hidden

Switching trips

On any list, tap the trip's name in the title to open the switcher: Trips home first, then your other trips with their packed counts.

Packing reminders

Give a trip a date and switch on Remind me to pack in its sheet. You get a notification on the days before you leave (three days before, the day before and the morning you leave, by default) with how many items are still to pack. Change the days and the time under Settings › Trips.

Which list opens first

Settings › Trips › Opening screen chooses between the Trips home and a particular trip.

Categories (Premium)

Categories group your items under headings such as Clothes, Toiletries and Tech. Turn them on under Settings › Categories › Enable Categories.

  • In Edit mode each heading has a circle that ticks the whole category, the count packed, and a bin that removes the category's items from this trip (the category itself stays)
  • In Pack mode, tap a heading to fold it away
  • Items are dragged within their category; to move an item to another category, edit it
  • Settings › Categories › Manage Categories adds, renames, repictures and reorders categories. A category with items in it cannot be deleted; move or remove the items first. General is where items go when categories are off

Templates (Premium)

A template is a ready-made list you add to a trip in a tap. Turn them on under Settings › Templates. Open them from Add items › From a template…

Built in

Summer, Winter, Short trip, Beach, Ski, Camping, Working away and With pets. Tap one to choose which of its items to add; anything already on your list is skipped, so applying a template twice never doubles up. Beach pairs with Summer and Ski with Winter: the app suggests the second one after you add the first.

Your own

  • Save a trip as a template from the list's menu (Save as template). Ticked items are saved unticked. A few days after a trip, the app also offers to save it
  • Tap + on the Templates screen to start one from scratch, then add categories and items in the editor
  • Long-press a template for Edit, Rename, Duplicate or Delete. A built-in can be copied and edited (Edit a copy); the original stays
  • The eye in the top bar hides templates you never use: tap the ones to hide or show, then the tick to save

Templates are shared by all your trips.

Reminders

Long-press any item and choose Add reminder to be notified at a time you pick (the reminder shows the trip and category the item is in). Long-press again to change or cancel it. Item reminders are free; packing reminders for a whole trip come with Trips.

The first reminder you set asks for permission to send notifications. If you refused it, turn notifications on for the app under the iPhone's Settings › Notifications.

iCloud Sync

Settings › Sync › Sync with iCloud keeps your trips, items, categories and templates the same on every device signed in to your iCloud account. It is on by default and needs nothing but an iCloud sign-in; the Status row says whether it is working.

Sync is not a backup: deleting something on one device deletes it everywhere. For a copy you keep, see Export below. Changes to the switch take effect the next time the app opens.

Export & Import

Settings › Your data › Export a copy… writes everything (trips, items, categories, templates) to one file and hands it to the share sheet: save it to Files, AirDrop it, or send it to yourself.

Import from a file… reads such a file and replaces everything currently in the app, after showing you what is in it. The same file works with the Android version of the app, so you can move from one to the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I reuse my list for the next trip?

Without Premium: in Edit mode tap the All circle to untick everything. With Premium: save the trip as a template, or duplicate the trip from the Trips home; the copy starts unticked.

Q: Where did my ticked items go?

Pack mode hides them so you see only what is left. Switch to Edit mode to see the whole list.

Q: Can I undo a delete?

Yes. Deleting an item, deleting checked items, removing a category's items and deleting a trip all show an Undo bar for a few seconds.

Q: Why can't I add items or search?

You are in Pack mode, which is only for ticking. Switch to Edit.

Q: I bought Premium on Android. Does it carry over?

No. Apple and Google purchases are separate, so the iOS unlock is a separate purchase. Your lists can move across with Export and Import.

Q: Does the app collect my data?

No. Your lists stay on your device and, with sync on, in your own iCloud account, which we cannot read. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob; see the Privacy Policy.
