Getting Started

Cardly keeps your rewards cards, gift cards and membership cards in one private wallet on your iPhone. There is no account to create and nothing to sign up for, and everything works without an internet connection.

Tap + at the top of the wallet to add your first card: point the camera at its barcode, then take a photo of the back and the front, or skip the photos. Cardly reads the store name from the front photo and matches the card's colour.

Tap a card in the wallet to open it. At the till, tap Open to Scan to show its barcode full-screen at full brightness.

Star the cards you use most. Favourites sit at the top of the wallet, open together in Scan Mode, and appear on the widgets and in the quick actions when you press and hold Cardly's icon.

Adding a Card

Tap + in the wallet. Adding a card takes up to four steps, and you can skip any of the photos:

  1. Scan the barcode. The first barcode the camera sees is used; Flash helps in dim light
  2. Photo of the back. Cardly crops it straight and, if the scan was skipped, reads the barcode from it
  3. Photo of the front. Cardly fills in the card's name from it and matches its colour
  4. Details: check the type, name and number, then tap Save

If the barcode will not scan, tap Enter Manually and type the number from the card. Cardly works out the barcode from the number.

In the details, choose the Card Type: Rewards, Gift, Member, Other, or a type of your own. At Checkout Show chooses whether Scan Mode shows the barcode or just the number, for cards the cashier types in. The star in the top bar makes the new card a favourite.

If you already have a card with the same barcode, Cardly asks before adding it again.

Showing a Card at the Checkout

Scan Mode is the screen you show at the register: the barcode on a white card against a dark screen, at full brightness, with the screen kept awake. Your brightness goes back to normal when you close it.

Open it with Open to Scan at the foot of a card, by pressing and holding a card in the wallet, from a widget or Control Center, or by asking Siri to Scan my Cardly favourites. If you would rather a tap in the wallet went straight to Scan Mode, turn on Settings › Wallet Screen › Open Scan Mode on Tap.

When a gift card is linked to a rewards card, Scan Mode shows them one after the other: scan the rewards card for the points, then swipe to the gift card to pay. A gift card's page also shows its PIN, which you can tap to enlarge, and its balance, with a link to update it.

A few things that help the scanner:

  • Hold the phone flat and still, a little way above the scanner glass
  • Wipe the screen: smudges and glare are the usual culprits
  • If all else fails, the number is on screen, so the cashier can key it in

The Card Screen

Tap a card in the wallet to open it. At the top is the card itself: the barcode, then each picture, then a tile in the card's colour. Swipe between them; the dots show where you are. Tap the barcode or a picture to fold them away into a strip, and tap the strip to bring them back.

Below are the Card Number with a copy button, and for a gift card the PIN (tap the eye to show it) and the Balance. Then the rows:

  • Details: everything the card holds; the pencil changes it
  • Pictures: photos of the card
  • Linked Gift Cards (on a rewards card) or Linked rewards cards (on a gift card): the cards that show together in Scan Mode
  • Notes (Premium): anything else about the card. Press and hold the row to read the note
  • Delete Card. A gift card with money left offers Hide Instead

The star in the top bar makes the card a favourite.

Gift Cards, Balances and Reminders

A gift card has a PIN, a balance and an expiry date. On the card screen, tap Update beside the balance and either type the New Balance or the Amount Spent; Cardly works out the other. The wallet shows what is left on each gift card.

The expiry date is kept with the balance, so enter the card's Current Balance as well when you add an expiry date.

Linking a gift card to a rewards card

Open either card and tap its linked cards row, then Link a Rewards Card or Link a Gift Card. A gift card can be linked to several rewards cards, and a rewards card to several gift cards. Linked cards open together in Scan Mode.

Spent cards

Turn on Settings › Wallet Screen › Hide Spent Gift Cards and a gift card is hidden once its balance reaches zero. Show it again from Edit in the wallet.

Expiry reminders (Premium)

Turn on Settings › Expiry Reminders › Remind Me Before Gift Cards Expire and allow notifications. Cardly reminds you 30, 7 and 1 day before a gift card expires, at 9:00 am, with what is left to spend. Change the days under Reminder Days and the time under Reminder Time. Cards that are spent or hidden are not reminded about.

The free version includes one gift card with its balance. Premium adds as many as you like.

Organising Your Wallet

The wallet groups your cards into sections: Favourites first, then one section for each card type. Search with the field at the bottom of the screen.

Tap Edit in the wallet to:

  • Choose the Wallet View: Tiles, or with Premium List, Grid, Stack or Full. Free users can tap a Premium view to try it with their own cards
  • Turn Group into Sections off to show one run of cards
  • Tap the eye on a card to hide it from the wallet, or show it again
  • Drag a card to reorder it within its section

Tap Done when you have finished.

Settings › Customise › Card Types renames your own types, adds new ones and sets the order of the wallet's sections. Colours adds colours to the palette you choose a card's colour from.

Widgets, Controls and Siri

Widgets

Press and hold your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Cardly. Tapping a widget opens the card in Scan Mode.

  • Cardly Card (small, free): one card, your top favourite unless you choose another
  • Cardly Card on the Lock Screen (free)
  • Cardly Favourites, Cardly Quick Access, Cardly Scan-Ready (a live barcode, with arrows to step through your favourites) and Cardly Card Scan (Premium)

Control Center (Premium)

A Cardly control opens one card in Scan Mode from Control Center. Open Control Center, press and hold an empty space, tap Add a Control, search for Cardly and tap Cardly card, then choose the card. Settings › Customise › Control Center Controls walks through it.

Quick actions and Siri

Press and hold Cardly's icon for your top four favourites. Ask Siri to Open (card) in Cardly or Scan my Cardly favourites, or use them in the Shortcuts app.

iCloud Sync

Cardly keeps your cards in step across your iPhones with iCloud. It is free and on by default: Settings › Your Data › Sync with iCloud.

  • Your iPhone needs to be signed in to iCloud; iOS does not let apps sign you in themselves. Status shows whether sync is on
  • Turning sync on or off takes effect the next time Cardly opens
  • Your cards are in your own private iCloud storage. There is no Cardly server, and we cannot see them
  • Gift card PINs travel separately, in iCloud Keychain, end-to-end encrypted. If iCloud Keychain is off, PINs stay on the iPhone they were typed on
  • Sync is not a backup: deleting a card deletes it on every iPhone

▲ Back to Contents

Import and Export (Premium)

Settings › Your Data › Import and Export saves all your cards, pictures and settings to one file, and reads one back in.

Export Cards

Choose where to save the file, such as Files or iCloud Drive. The file holds your card numbers, so keep it somewhere private and do not email it.

If a gift card that is not used up has a PIN, Cardly asks for a password and locks the PINs with it before saving. You need the same password to import them. Cardly cannot recover a forgotten password: the cards still import, just without those PINs.

Import Cards

Importing replaces every card, picture and setting on this iPhone with the ones in the file, and cannot be undone. The app lock, iCloud sync and expiry reminder settings are not part of the file.

▲ Back to Contents

Security and Privacy

Cardly has no account and no server. Your cards stay on your iPhone and, if sync is on, in your own iCloud. Cardly shows no ads from any ad network.

Face ID Lock (Premium)

Settings › App Lock › Face ID Lock asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode when Cardly opens, and again after it has been in the background for more than 30 seconds. Your iPhone needs a passcode set up first. While the lock is on, the barcode widgets ask you to unlock Cardly instead of showing the barcode.

PINs

Gift card PINs are kept in the iPhone's Keychain, apart from your other card details, and are hidden until you tap the eye. A copied PIN stays on this iPhone and is cleared from the clipboard after two minutes.

Delete All Data

Settings › About › Delete All Data removes every card, picture, PIN and setting. Type OK to confirm. It cannot be undone, and with iCloud sync on, the cards are removed from your other iPhones too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an account to use Cardly?

No. There is nothing to sign up for. Add a card and start using it: your wallet is yours alone.

Q: Does Cardly work without an internet connection?

Yes. Cardly does not need a connection to show your cards, so they work with no signal, which matters because checkout queues are where reception tends to disappear. iCloud sync catches up when you are back online.

Q: The camera will not read my card's barcode. What can I do?

Tap Enter Manually and type the number from the card. This also covers cards whose barcode is worn, damaged or too small to read. If the card has no barcode at all, set At Checkout Show to Number.

Q: The shop's scanner will not read my phone. What can I do?

Open the card in Scan Mode, which turns the brightness up, and hold the phone flat and still a little way above the scanner. Wipe the screen if it is smudged. If it still will not scan, the card number is on screen for the cashier to type in.

Q: How do I move my cards to a new iPhone?

Sign in to iCloud on the new iPhone with the same Apple Account and install Cardly: with Sync with iCloud on, your cards arrive by themselves, and your PINs come with iCloud Keychain. With Premium you can also export your cards to a file and import it on the new iPhone.

Q: I bought Premium on Android. Does it work on my iPhone?

No. Purchases belong to the store they were made in: Google Play purchases cannot be used in Apple's App Store, or the other way round.

Q: How do I get Premium back after reinstalling Cardly?

Open Cardly Premium (the crown in the wallet, or Settings › Premium) and tap Restore, signed in with the Apple Account that bought it.

Q: Why does a gift card say PIN not imported?

The file it came from had the PIN locked with a password, and the import went ahead without it. Open the card, tap Details, then the pencil, and type the PIN in again.

Q: Why did my gift card's expiry date disappear?

Cardly keeps the expiry date together with the balance. Edit the card and enter its Current Balance as well as the expiry date.

Q: Where did my hidden cards go?

Tap Edit in the wallet. Hidden cards are shown faded; tap the eye on a card to show it again, then tap Done.
